June 2012 - Facts on Stroke

Stroke is a sudden loss of brain function caused by the interruption of blood flow to the brain, as a result of either an ischemic stroke (a blood clot) or a hemorrhagic stroke (a rupture of a blood vessel and bleeding into or around the brain). Approximately 80% of strokes are ischemic and 20% are hemorrhagic.

What is high blood pressure (hypertension)?

Blood pressure is a measurement of the force of your blood against the blood vessel walls. The recommended target for 
people with diabetes is less than 130/80 mm Hg. The top number is the pressure when your heart contracts and pushes blood out (systolic).
