February 2014 - Vaccinations: Not Just Kid Stuff!

Posted by Pharmasave Smith Drugs on Thursday, May 15, 2014,

Vaccines have turned the tide against some of the most serious diseases, helping us to live longer and healthier lives. Many adults think that vaccines are just for kids, but unfortunately, the shots we get as children won’t protect us forever. Immunization rates for Canadian adults are quite low. It is important that adults get vaccinated too.

The truth is that shots given to you during childhood may not be enough to protect you now. Your immune system ages just like the rest of your body, ...

February 2013 - Understanding High Blood Pressure

Posted by Pharmasave Smith Drugs on Thursday, May 9, 2013,
High blood pressure is the result of blood pressing too tightly against the inner walls of blood vessels (veins and arteries). High blood pressure is also sometimes called hypertension.

Untreated high blood pressure puts stress on many of your internal organs, such as your heart, kidney, and brain, and can lead to heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure.

Blood pressure measurements are shown as two numbers (e.g., 130/80). The first (top) number is systolic pressure – the pressure in your blo...

September 2012 - Let's Talk About High Cholesterol

Do you need a vitamin supplement?

Everyone knows that proper nutrition is necessary for good health, but just what exactly does that mean? What is good nutrition? And how do you know if you are getting all the nutrients your body needs to stay healthy?

A good place to start is with Canada's Food Guide. Health and nutrition experts developed the guide to help Canadians choose the right foods in the right amounts to maintain their health.

February 2011 - High Blood Pressure

Posted by Smith Drugs on Thursday, April 5, 2012,

What is high blood pressure (hypertension)?

Blood pressure is a measurement of the force of your blood against the blood vessel walls. The recommended target for
people with diabetes is less than 130/80 mm Hg. The top number is the pressure when your heart contracts and pushes blood out (systolic). The bottom number is the pressure when the heart relaxes between beats (diastolic). For non-diabetic adults, normal blood pressure is considered to be less than 140/90 mm Hg. There are often no sym...
